Staff Objectives

Tree of Life seeks outcomes-focused applicants that possess a genuine love & commitment to children & families & will embrace and advance the school mission and principles. As the organization embarks upon significant growth and change, applicants should be able to embrace & serve as an agent for change. Applicants are sought for the following positions:

Teachers - Pre-kindergarten through 8th grade. Applicants must possess the ability to facilitate a learning environment that stimulates all children to learn; have high expectations for student achievement for all children; establish positive relationships with students and parents; promote parental involvement (& include parents in program planning & implementation); embrace & implement school principles & instructional methodologies; assess student needs and learning styles; develop & maintain individualized learning plans (ILP); supervise instructional assistant (where appropriate); adaptability/flexibility & creativity in the delivery of instruction; curriculum enhancement & design skills a plus; and recognize and chart student progress. Minimum of a BA in Early Childhood Education, Elementary or Secondary Education. Certification/ highly-qualified status required. Requires a minimum of one year of teaching experience. Experience teaching African-American students and/or in urban schools strongly preferred.

Teaching Assistants - Provide support to teachers in grades Pre-K through 4. Minimum of an Associate’s degree and 1 year experience working with children required.

Substitutes - reliable, creative professionals to augment regular staff on an as needed basis. Certification required

Tutors - Seeking teachers and professionals to tutor in math and reading on a part-time basis.

School Nurse — licensed registered nurse for 20 hours per week

Spanish Teacher - part-time foreign language special teacher

Core Curriculum

The academic core disciplines are: reading and literacy, language arts, math, science, social studies, writing, and foreign language. Student culture, relationships, and responsibility are themes that are infused into the academic curriculum. The Tree of Life Community School uses Open Court Reading (OCR), a scientifically- based reading curriculum for the instruction of reading, writing and language arts. Tree of Life uses the Talent Development Middle School Curriculum for grades 6-8.

We believe that reading and language is the core of what school success means in the early grades. Consistent with this belief, we devote considerable time toward reading, language and literacy.

TOL utilizes Everyday Mathematics. Everyday Mathematics meets our objective to provide a content-rich, comprehensive and rigorous math curriculum, while nurturing higher order and critical thinking skills, using everyday, real-world problems and situations.
